RESEARCH

Every good project begins with knowing whom the intended audience is and what problem the design work needs to solve. If design does not solve a problem it is not very useful. I begin all my projects by doing research whether by searches on the internet, getting to know an audience on social media, interviewing experienced co-workers, researching competitors or the industry, or doing research on the company itself.

DEVELOP CONCEPTS

This might be the most enjoyable part of the whole process for me because I get to look for inspiration by competitors and related products and explore ideas. Concepts are always sketched out with good old fashioned pen and paper before I hit the computer because I have great flexibility and there isn't a need to be precise yet. Any idea is fair game and I work until something sticks. One these concepts are presented, the process of elimination can start to begin.

SOLIDIFY IDEAS

Now it is time to get those ideas a little more fleshed out on the computer. Exploration is still done a little but it is mostly about finalizing design ideas into something more concrete. These designs are then presented to see which one stands out as the best design solution.

ONE FINAL DESIGN

Based off the previous step, it is time to start refining one design. Working in programs like Photoshop, Illustrator or InDesign, this process takes as long as it needs to so that the final product is the best it can be. Shortcuts in the end hurt everyone. Sometimes this process is done solo while other times collaboration is necessary because one cannot be an expert at everything. This process also includes things like meetings, user testing if necessary, revisions and production of final design.
